Scholars speak out: Voices from the field (Indonesia)
To promote the “extensive reading approach” worldwide, the Extensive Reading Foundation (ERF) invites teachers and scholars to apply for a scholarship in order to take part in the ERWC for their own professional development and for the future promotion of Extensive Reading in their home countries. This session features an overview of extensive reading and the common issues and challenges in the Indonesian context followed by individual presentations by the 4 scholarship recipients on their plans for carrying forward in implementing & growing extensive reading.

Ainur is a language instructor at the Language Center of Universitas Tanjungpura Indonesia. He is interested in the ER approach after attending a Tom Rob's talk in 2017. Since then, he actively incorporates this program in his institution. Fully supported by the head of the language center, he collaborates with other English language lecturers at the university by involving thousands of students to read. What makes him very excited about this approach is the fact that most of these students basically have little or no experience in finishing English-written books. But today, it is common to see students read thirty to forty books in a semester.

Martini is a teacher of English in a government Senior High School. She is a friendly and openminded person. She is interested in Extensive Reading (ER) and has done it in her classrooms for several years. She creates some activities to motivate her students to do ER, one of her activities is creating a poadcast called "LitTalk' to promote the ER in her school. She also likes sharing with teachers and others experts in ER around the world about implementing ER.

Yoh. Moses Songkares is an English teacher at St. John Berkhmans, Todabelu, Mataloko, a private school on the island of Flores, NTT, eastern Indonesia. He has been actively involved in the Extensive Reading program since 2021. His school has incorporated Extensive Reading into the curriculum. He actively promotes Extensive Reading to schools and groups of students in his region.

Mahbudin, is an English teacher and head of school library at State Islamic Junior High School in Pandeglang, Banten, Indonesia. His interests are extensive reading and viewing, literacy development, and technology enhanced language learning.

Greg Rouault is an Associate Professor at Hiroshima Shudo University. He has a Master of Applied Linguistics from Macquarie University and has taught EFL in Japan for over 20 years. His research interests include ER & reading literacy, business English, and experiential task-based learning with simulations. International publications have appeared in System, TESOL Quarterly, The Reading Matrix, and several Asian-based journals.
